Artworks community craft and art center, headquartered in Chestertown, has announced its Fall clay classes at its studio located at the Arts at Still Pond Station in Worton. An opportunity for independent work is also available, and those enrolled in classes may practice during this Open Studio time.

“Total Beginners 4-Week Class”, taught by Gia Campana, is for those interested in working with clay but with little or no experience with the medium. Students become acquainted with fundamental clay forming skills such as pinch, coil, soft and hard slab construction, then move on to decoration and basic glazing procedures. Work may include plates, mugs, bowls and vases as well as sculptural forms. The class begins Friday, Oct. 1 from 9:30-12 noon.

“Continuing Potters Wheel” is a weekly class with Marilee Schumann, open to beginners as well as those who already know how to throw. Small classes with personal attention allow students to progress at their own speed, working on basic forms or more advanced designs, and decorative or functional pieces. Sessions are offered Tuesday evenings beginning Sep. 21 from 6:-8:30 p.m. or Wednesday mornings beginning Sep. 22 from 9:30-12 noon.

“Hand Building and Sculpture, taught by Gia Campana, starts Thursday, Sep. 30, 9:30-noon or 6-8:30 pm for eight weeks.

Two new classes offer different opportunities for creative expression. “Painting or Porcelain Tiles”, with Fran Phaneuf, is a three-day workshop, Oct. 18, 19, and 22 or Dec. 4,5, and 11 from 12:30-3:30 pm. “Architectural Abstract Forms in Clay”, taught by Megan Van Wagoner, is a two-day handbuilding workshop on Oct. 23-24 from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm.

Also new this year is a One-Day Basic Overview for those who say “I always wanted to take a pottery class!” being held on Saturday, Sep. 18, from 9-11:30 am.

An “open studio” is also offered most Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon until 3. Experienced students and artists or those taking classes may work on their own with access to state-of-the-art-studio equipment and facilities when a monitor is present.

Because classes are small, usually no more than 6 people, some flexibility in scheduling is possible. The program is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
